Welcome to the conference website 🔬 The "Bast from the Past" Conference is Coming! 🌿 We are excited to announce the first "Bast from the Past" conference, which will take place at Université Bretagne Sud in Lorient, France, this October! This unique event will bring together scientists from Materials Science, Archaeology, and Archaeometry to explore properties of ancient plant fibres, such as flax, hemp, and other fibres with ancestral uses, like cotton and milkweed. Our aim is to better understand the properties and ageing mechanisms of these fibres that have endured through the ages. This conference will ne also a unique opprotunity to federate our communities and propose a state of the art of available skills and scientific backgrounds, to initiate collaborations and future works between our scientific sectors, so close but sometimes so far away. We invite you to submit your work on the intersection of archaeology, archaeometry, materials science, and plant fibres! The deadline for submitting your abstract is 13 June 2025! We look forward to sharing multidisciplinary discussions and exploring the potential of these ancient fibres for the future of sustainable materials. The "Bast from the Past" conference is co-organized by Université Bretagne Sud,IRDL - UMR CNRS 6027/UBS/ENSTA-Bretagne/ENIB/UBO,Institut français d'archéologie orientale - Ifao,Laboratoire des Sciences du Climat et de l'Environnement, University of Cambridge,Universitetet i Bergen (UiB). The conference is supported and funded by Institut francais de Norvège through the Åsgard programme and ANR (Agence nationale de la recherche) through the ANUBIS PROJECT.
